Getting ready

I performed some preventative maintenance this winter on the GS to minimize problems on the trip. The BMW R100 motorcycles have a known issue with transmissions failing because the fifth gear can be pushed out of position on the output shaft puting a side load on the output bearing, causing it to fail. Because my bike is in the range of years this could happen, I took out the transmission and had it opened up by Matt Parkhouse of Colorado Springs to have a look. It seems my tranny was in good shape but I had Matt install a circlip to keep the fifth gear in place, the common fix.

  1. Don't forget about eye patches so you can sleep. For me, the midnight sunlight was distracting.
