Day 13 - Prudhoe Bay to Wiseman, AK 243 miles

We finally got a warm day. It was windy but almost 60 degrees when we left Prudhoe Bay. The Prudhoe Bay Motel is one of many places where the workers stay when they are on their "two weeks on". We got our breakfast at the cafeteria where the workers eat which was included in our $110 each for the night. We also grabbed a sandwich, chips, cookies and a juice to have for lunch on the road. We got gas at the company station which was really set up strange. The pumps were insidea shack with a seperate credit card accepter but the tanks were above ground outside the shack. It worked but you would think gas would be free there but it was $4.56 a gallon. I know you Canadians are saying "so what" but that is the most we have paid in a US station. This section of Alasks has quite a few mesquitoes. When we stopped we looked for a breeze or had to keep moving. We stopped at a river to get the mud out of Ron's radiator and my oil cooler and eat the sandwiches.

It got up to 75 degrees when we pulled up to the final construction section for the day. I asked the flag lady how far to the Wiseman turnoff and she said we had missed it about 5 miles back. During the construction they have taken down all of the signs. Our B&B is called Artic Getaway and is a log cabin that was built in 1993 and is very cool. The owners have sled dogs that are frendly. There is a trap rack, sleds, antlers all over the place. It is pretty rustic. Wiseman has 13 inhabitants, not including dogs. Two of the three kids in town belong to the B&B owners. They hunt all of their meat as well as trap.

Back to Uncle Dan's tomorrrow to get our camping gear.
