Day 5 -Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway

Grande Prairie, AB to Fort Nelson, BC, 369 miles.  Be careful what you complain about. The warm weather ended after raining much of the night.  We woke to a temperature of 50F and it warmed up to mid 60s during the day.  We packed everything up wet which added even more weight to the bikes.  We crossed over in to British Columbia and passed through Dawson Creek, the beginning of the Alaska Highway.  In Dawson Creek we met Rick Giffin.  Rick is on a 6,000 mile bicycle ride from Florida to Deadhorse, Alaska.  He is doing the ride in support of the Wounded Warrior Project.  He has a Facebook page set up under Journey for Wounded Warriors. After leaving Dawson Creek we rode in high winds again for most the day.  We also had a couple of rain showers.  We learned another lesson about gas today.  Just because the map says there is gas does not mean much.  Prophet River had two gas stations.  One was out of business and the other had closed for the day an hour before we got there.  A guy in a pickup sold me a couple of gallons of gas.  I'm now going to start carrying extra gas.  To end the day we cooked dinner in the rain.  We're the only tent campers surrounded by over 100 RVs.

  1. "raining much of the night" - "packed everything up wet" - sounds a lot like hunting
around State Bridge. Following you on Google Earth - what with all the pictures they have
it's almost like being with you.

Congratulations on making it to the beginning of the "Alaskan Highway" in Dawson Creek. That is a good photo of the two of you by the sign. I guess you have been humming the classic tune, "North to Alaska" by Johnny Horton all day long in your helmet. It sounds like your two bikes having been running flawless and I am envious. I have been tuning up the BSA all week just to make it up to Conifer. I hope the Northern Lights are running wild in the land of the midnight sun.
